This is the Lightship Chesapeake. She was one of six ships in the LS 100 class of lightships. One sister, LV-117 was the Nantucket Lightship, famous for having been rammed and sunk by the RMS Olympic. It was very surreal to stand on her decks, seeing what those men would have seen in the 1930s as Olympics bow loomed out of the fog. Chesapeake left her station at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in September 1965 when she was replaced by a large, manned light tower similar to an oil rig. This was unfortunately the fate of all Lightships. There are currently none in active service.
