This is one of the many cannons you can see from the exterior of the ship. No matter how many times you see them in television and movies, nothing can prepare you for how… big… they are… They carry this ominous, imposing presence, like a sleeping bear. Even when it's not pointed at you, it can still easily kill you. You can see that the one behind this one is tied up with ropes. These cannons had several points that you could attach rope to, so when the cannon went off, it didn’t go flying to the other side of the ship from the recoil. I’d imagine the ropes are also useful in heavy seas.
