This picture is from the second time I visited Baltimore. The first visit was actually for my younger sister, who wanted to attend a Billie Eilish concert in Baltimore. I tagged along, and imagine my shock when I was face to face with an 1854 sloop of war! In a famous example of my bad luck, on the day we were supposed to go see the historic ships, I woke up with a very sore throat, and my whole body hurt horribly. It was October though, so it was cold out and the ships were thankfully virtually empty. I soldiered on because I thought that I might not have had an opportunity to see these ships again. Well, in November of that year, my mother got diagnosed with breast cancer. As I write this, my mother is fine and has finished her treatment, but at the time, we were concerned that she might actually die. She was set to start treatment in July, so she wanted to do something special for me and my sister. My choice was to return to Baltimore with my boyfriend so he could see the ships. My hobby of photography also started in October of that year not long after my first visit, so it was also a great opportunity to get some cool pictures. My sister decided to stay home with my dad, so my mom did something special with my sister separately. When we first visited Baltimore, I remember that the fate of the SS United States was still up in the air. I remember thinking how nice it would be if she could join Baltimore's collection of historic ships. By the time we visited again in March, I had already chased her down the Delaware river. My boyfriend and I love the game “Return of the Obra Dinn”, so when I stepped aboard for the first time in October, it was quite the experience. Not to be one of those “Real life racism is just like Harry Potter!” people, but it was just like the game. I kept sending my boyfriend pictures, and he was in college at the time, so he was throwing a fit because I got to explore a pirate ship while he was stuck in school. I even still have the texts he sent me. “I'm so pissed you're on that ship and I'm not”, “Like I'm in a bed, and not on that ship”, and my favorite: “I W-WANNA GO. I WANNA GO. I WAN-I NEED TO G- I WANA”. He also wasn’t my boyfriend yet at the time, which is really funny to think about. Luckily for him, he’d get to go a few months later in March.
