Like the previous picture, I don’t have a lot to say about this one, so I’ll use this space to say this: It's weird to think that now, I’m a first hand source on a historical event. Like, in 50 to 100 years, the future equivalent of Oceanliner Designs or Big Old Boats might make a video on the SS United States, or even her final voyage, and given my extensive knowledge on the history of ocean liners, my perspective and experience may be found to be particularly noteworthy and worth calling upon. The day before this picture was taken, I spoke to a man about the SS United States, and he had never even heard of the SS America. How many people just came out to see a big old ship get moved? How many people only knew her because they drove by her every day on their way to work? How many of the people who lined the shores and beaches knew nothing of her speed record, or William Francis Gibbs? How many people looked to the small wave at her prow and thought of her hydrodynamic hull?
